Kissing the Blarney Stone

Comments 8 Standard

People come from all over the world to visit Blarney Castle in Ireland and kiss the infamous Blarney Stone. What makes this stone so special? Legend says that the builder of Blarney Castle, Cormac Teige McCarthy was about to be deprived of his land so he went to goddess Clíodhna for help. Some Irish myths say she is the goddess of love and beauty and others that she is the ruler of the fairy women in the country’s hills. She told him to kiss the first stone that he finds on his way to court and by doing so, he will be given the “gift of gab” (great eloquence or skill flattery). He followed her instructions and was able to persuade the queen to let him keep his land and won his case. He credited Clíodhna and the stone for his win and therefore built the stone into the castle.

It is not an easy task to kiss this stone. The only way to reach it is by hanging upside down at the top of the castle which is almost 90 feet high! You can’t do it on your own because of the gap so there are iron rails built into the wall to grab onto along with someone holding you. I was nervous to have half my body hanging over a ledge but I just closed my eyes, kissed the stone and made a wish!

I was thrilled to be able to do this and enjoyed visiting the castle. If you are not keen on the idea of kissing the stone, the castle itself is still worth visiting. It is truly an amazing landmark with great history behind it and surrounded by charming scenery.

  1. When I did a brief stint in Ireland, I wanted to kiss the Blarney Stone but was sad that my schedule didn’t have enough time for it.
Not that it’s true or anything, but a friend told me the locals pee on the stone because tourists kiss it. I didn’t feel so sad anymore.

Not that you kissed a pee stone or anything… A rumor is just a rumor…

  2. The germaphobe in me has always wondered about how many people’s germs are on that stone, but I think that it’s something that you’ve just gotta do so I would just not think about it and kiss away! 🙂

  3. I have been to Blarney Castle and felt it was a bit overrated, considering we need to kiss the stone that’s kissed by million other people. Although I didn’t want to miss it out, and kissed the stone. But yeah…the castle gardens are one of the loveliest places on earth…green and gorgeous.
